Tooth extraction is a common procedure performed to treat teeth that cannot be saved. The correct care to be performed after the procedure ensures that the healing process passes quickly and smoothly. The things to be considered after tooth extraction are aimed at minimizing the risk of pain, bleeding and infection.
After tooth extraction, a blood clot forms in the extraction site. This clot protects the wound and enables healthy tissue healing. It is very important that this clot remains intact during the first 24 hours. Rinsing the mouth, spitting, using a straw, or manipulating the extraction site may cause the clot to dislodge.
The gauze pad placed by the dentist should be bitten and held in place for approximately 30–45 minutes. Slight bleeding is normal in the first hours. However, if bleeding persists for a long time, a dentist should be consulted immediately. Hot food and drinks should be avoided on the first day, warm or cold foods should be preferred.
Nutrition after tooth extraction directly affects the healing process. Soft and easily chewable foods should be consumed on the first day. Hard, crusty and spicy foods can irritate the attraction zone. Chewing should not be done with the shooting side, oral hygiene should be paid attention to.
Smoking and alcohol use are among the most important factors that delay recovery. Smoking increases the risk of infection by reducing blood circulation in the shooting area. For this reason, it is recommended not to use cigarettes and alcohol for at least 48 hours. While brushing teeth, the extraction site should not be directly touched.
Mild pain and swelling after tooth extraction are considered normal. Especially during surgical tooth extraction, this condition may be more pronounced. The painkillers recommended by the doctor should be used regularly and cold application should be made from the outside if necessary. The pain usually subsides within a few days.
Conditions such as severe, gradually increasing pain, bad smell, intense swelling or prolonged bleeding are not normal. These symptoms may indicate infection or clot loss. In such a case, it is necessary to consult a dentist without wasting time.
