Root canal treatment is a treatment applied to clean the infected or damaged nerve tissue located in the inner part of the tooth and to restore the function of the tooth. There is a widespread belief in society that root canal treatment is very painful; however, thanks to modern methods applied today, the procedure is performed largely painlessly.
Root canal treatment is applied in cases where the internal tissue of the tooth, called the pulp, is infected or damaged. Deep caries, blows to the tooth and cracks that have not been treated for a long time may require root canal treatment. In such cases, the infection can progress, causing abscess formation and severe pain.
Root canal treatment aims to save the tooth without pulling it out. The protection of natural teeth in the mouth is very important for the continuity of chewing function and oral health.
Local anesthesia is applied during root canal treatment. Thanks to this, pain is not felt throughout the procedure. Most patients realize that the treatment is not as difficult and painful as they thought. The discomfort felt usually consists of a short-term feeling of pressure.
Slight tenderness or tingling may occur after treatment. This condition is normal and goes away on its own within a few days. This process can be easily controlled with the painkillers recommended by the doctor.
After root canal treatment, the tooth may be sensitive for a while. For this reason, hard foods should not be chewed with the treated tooth. The controls recommended by the dentist should not be disrupted and, if necessary, upper filling or coating procedures should be performed on time.
Severe pain, swelling or long-lasting tenderness that occurs after treatment is not considered normal. In such cases, the dentist should be consulted without wasting time.
As a result, root canal treatment is not a painful procedure, but on the contrary, it is a treatment that eliminates existing pain. Root canal treatment performed at an early stage ensures that the tooth remains in the mouth in a healthy way for many years.
